Instead, a focus on human reactions makes this a surprisingly character-focused film for such a plot-driven story. Given the visceral horrors the visuals could easily have thrown up, it is interesting that gratuitous gore is not generally on the agenda. As convention and ominous music dictates, an accident occurs and the two men’s decisions spiral them further down a particularly dark rabbit hole. Jack Lowden plays Vaughan, taken hunting in the Highlands by his friend Marcus (Martin McCann) as a final hurrah before the birth of his first child. Few films, though, fill in those valleys and crags with both visual flair and characters as compelling as the landscapes they traverse. As he builds up courage and slowly pulls the trigger, something unexpected leaves the two men shell-shocked and fighting for their futures.Matt Palmer’s CALIBRE is not the first film to utilise the dramatic setting of Scotland’s Highlands to heighten its own thriller stylings, nor will it be the last. Traveling deep into the dense, quiet woods, the two men stumble upon a deer, with Marcus encouraging Vaughn as he sets up to take his first shot. The next morning, a hungover Vaughn is awoken by an eager Marcus, as they are already running behind in their planned adventures. After Marcus and Kara leave together for the evening, Vaughn and Iona continue to drink as he opens up about his fears of becoming a father. Ahead of their hunting adventure, the two men pop into the local pub and meet some townspeople, including community leader Logan ( Tony Curran) and locals Kara and Iona. ![]() Marcus, an avid hunter, is keen to teach Vaughn how to do so. The two drive from the city to the remote Scottish Highlands for a weekend of “stalking”. With his first child on the way, Vaughn ( Lowden) decides to take a weekend trip with his childhood schoolmate, Marcus ( McCann). ![]()
